About Friends of Cincinnati Fisher House

The mission of the Friends of the Cincinnati Fisher House is to support veterans and military personnel receiving treatment at the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center by providing a comfortable homelike facility for their families during the patient’s stay in Cincinnati. The Friends also lend support and assistance for the development of similar Fisher Houses throughout the country.

By providing complementary safe, comfortable housing adjacent to the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Friends give military families an opportunity to be close to the patient during medical treatment and ease the financial hardship and disruption of family life caused by a hospital stay away from their home cities.

The Friends began in 1996 as a volunteer group of veterans and friends in response to an outreach at the Cincinnati VA Hospital. Recognizing that families of veterans receiving treatment at the Hospital often travelled with the patient for extended periods of time, at significant cost, with disruption of family life, and often with discomfort from lack of appropriate lodging, the group sought the support of community leaders to assist them in providing resources and facilities for the veterans and their families. The response from the community was overwhelming and plans for building a facility to be known as the Veterans Support Lodge began in earnest.

Five years later, incorporated under the name Veterans Guest House, the volunteers launched a fundraising campaign to raise approximately $5 million to build and endow the operation of the House.  During the campaign, the Board forged an alliance with the Fisher House Foundation, an organization with a similar mission to offer “comfort homes” for families of hospitalized military personnel at various military bases throughout the country. Through the combined efforts of the two organizations, the cooperation of the Veteran’s Administration and the efforts of many volunteers and supporters, the Cincinnati Fisher House opened in October 2001.  The partnership between the Veterans Guest House Board and the Fisher House Foundation Board became the model for all future Fisher House expansion.

Upon completion of its goal to provide an outstanding “comfort home” at the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Veterans Guest House changed its name to Friends of Cincinnati Fisher House. The organization continues to ensure the comfort of the guests staying at the Cincinnati Fisher House and to support the national mission of the Fisher House Foundation.

The Cincinnati Fisher House relies on volunteers and donations. Your support and contributions are greatly appreciated, and help continue this much needed assistance to our veterans and their families.
